Histadrut Chairman: “We Are at the Center of Israel’s Decision-Making”
The Histadrut is asserting its influence on the nation’s decision-making processes, according to Histadrut Chairman Arnon Bar-David. Speaking at the Arlozorov 2024 Conference under the theme “A New Agenda”, Bar-David emphasized the organization’s pivotal role in protecting democracy and shaping the country’s socio-economic landscape.
“The Histadrut defends democracy in Israel,” Bar-David declared during the event held at the ANU Museum at Tel Aviv University. Organized by the Arlozorov Forum, the Histadrut-affiliated research institute focused on socio-economic policy, the conference drew key policymakers and thought leaders.
“Driving Change in Unprecedented Times”
Reflecting on recent challenges, including multiple elections, the COVID-19 pandemic, and an ongoing war, Bar-David highlighted the Histadrut’s resilience and adaptability. “Despite almost impossible conditions, we’ve managed the labor market effectively and maintained partnerships with all governments, regardless of their political leanings,” he said.
Bar-David also spotlighted the Histadrut’s historic and ongoing contributions, noting its significant actions during recent national crises:
- Strikes for Democracy: The Histadrut initiated two nationwide strikes to oppose controversial government decisions and played a role in halting the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
- Advocacy for Hostages: A strike on September 2, 2024, demanded the return of hostages, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to values over politics.
“Balancing Power with Research and Vision”
The Chairman introduced the Arlozorov Forum as a counterweight to the Kohelet Forum, which he accused of threatening Israel’s foundational values of equality and social welfare. “The Arlozorov Forum presents research that supports a pluralistic, welfare-oriented vision for Israel—a state that prioritizes its working people,” Bar-David said.
“Achievements for Workers, Vision for the Future”
Under Bar-David’s leadership, the Histadrut has expanded its reach, collaborating across sectors and delivering results for workers, including a shorter workweek and extended weekends. “We are building a stronger, more inclusive Histadrut that drives progress for all sectors of Israeli society,” he concluded.
Key Takeaways from the Conference:
- The Histadrut reaffirms its central role in Israel’s policy-making.
- Calls to prioritize rebuilding the nation post-crisis, including returning hostages and resettling displaced persons.
- The Arlozorov Forum emerges as a vital platform for socio-economic research aligned with Israel’s democratic values.
