Bar-David: I wish for our children to live in Athens, not Sparta

Sep 16, 2025

“I don’t want us to be Sparta. I wish for our children to live in Athens, not Sparta,” said Histadrut Chairman Arnon Bar-David during a recent leadership meeting, responding to comments made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Athens knew how to fight, but also how to nurture culture, art, and the well-being of its citizens. I want to live in a country that invests in the future of its children and its people.”

He continued:

“We must aim for economic growth and move Israel’s economy forward. I know where I’m leading the Histadrut and Israel’s workers. I want to see our national leadership clearly guiding the country and the Jewish people. We deserve peace. Israeli society is exhausted, and our global standing is deteriorating. I hope to see the hostages return home soon and an end to the war.”

At the meeting, which included union leaders, regional heads from across the country, and committee chairs, Bar-David added:
“We are partners in the most significant economic initiatives, working to build a better society, one with more cooperation and less violence. In this house, everyone sits together, regardless of political affiliation. Here, there is solidarity. Everyone works together for the benefit of the workers. I hope we all enter a better period. We have an incredible country with incredible people.”
