The Histadrut’s IDF Civil Servants Workers’ Union has announced a labor dispute following Defense Minister Israel Katz’s unilateral decision to close Galei Tzahal, one of Israel’s most prominent broadcasting stations. The move, which affects roughly 100 civilian employees, was made without prior negotiations, despite its far-reaching implications for workers’ rights and job security.

Galei Tzahal, operated by the IDF, began broadcasting in the 1950s as a continuation of the Hagana’s pre-state radio service. Over time, it transformed into one of Israel’s leading public news and cultural broadcasters.”

The unilateral and aggressive decision is lacking in good faith, given that agreements had previously been reached between the union and the Ministry of Defense regarding structural changes at the station. It’s closure would lead to terminations and undermine the stability of employees who have served the public for years.

IDF Civil Servants Workers’ Union Chair, Meir Ben Harush, emphasized the Histadrut’s determination “to preserve the employment security and future of the workers.”

The union also criticized the process leading to the decision, noting that the recommendations of the committee appointed by the Defense Minister were under review by the Attorney General due to concerns of political interference in public broadcasting. Despite these concerns, Katz adopted the committee’s recommendations, fueling fears that the closure was predetermined.

Katz’s decision to assist employees and maintain Galgalatz, Galei Tzahal’s music-focused sister station, is misguided and harmful to workers. The Histadrut calls for immediate negotiations to ensure fair treatment and prevent irreversible damage to employees’ livelihoods.
